What Causes Sensitive Skin in Babies?

So, why do babies have such sensitive skin? For one thing, their delicate skin is around 30% thinner than an adult’s. As a result, it carries a much higher risk of drying up or becoming irritated. Their thin skin also makes them more sensitive to temperature changes. Thankfully, your child’s skin will mature and develop throughout its first month to form its own natural protective barrier.

Common Signs That Your Baby Has Sensitive Skin

Are you worried that your child is struggling with sensitive skin? Newborn skin tends to be more sensitive than older children and adults, so you need to keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Dry skin
  • Baby acne
  • Redness
  • Tiny white bumps
  • Red itchy bumps
  • Heat rash, which could be eczema
  • Diaper rash

Some conditions will go away on their own after several weeks. However, there are numerous steps you can take to keep your baby comfortable.

6 Tips for Taking Care of Children with Sensitive Skin

1. Pre-Wash Your Baby’s Clothes

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), you should always wash your baby’s clothes before they wear them for the first time. If there are any store or factory-borne irritants on the fabric, they will be washed away. When washing your baby’s clothes, make sure you are using a soft baby detergent designed for their sensitive skin. Detergents with gentle ingredients and low amounts of fragrance and dyes are best for babies and children with sensitive skin.

2. Keep the Sun Away

Make sure you are protecting your child from harmful UV rays whenever you are out and about. Infants under 6 months should be kept in the shade as much as possible. Before going out, make sure you dress them in a hat featuring an all-around three-inch brim as well as a long-sleeved shirt and pants

If it’s hot out, make sure you are monitoring your child’s temperature. Lark Adventurewear offers breathable sun-protective clothing for kids with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50+. You can also apply a small amount of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to your child’s skin. Avoid using sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

3. Limit Bathing Time

Giving your child too many baths can dry out their skin. You don’t need to bathe your child every day. In fact, you can keep it to three bathing sessions a week. While bathing your baby, make sure you keep the water warm and around 100° F.

When necessary, you can give your little one a quick sponge bath. Using a washcloth, gently pat your baby’s face and skin folds at least twice a day.

4. Don’t Forget to Apply Moisturizer

Because of their underdeveloped skin barrier, newborn skin does not absorb water well. If, after a few weeks of their birth, you notice that your baby’s skin still suffers from dryness, you can treat it with a moisturizer. Petroleum jelly is a popular recommendation among pediatric dermatologists. Unscented creams and lotions are also great. Whatever substance you choose, make sure you apply it within three minutes of taking your baby out of the bath.

5. Leave Blemishes Alone

Some babies develop rashes and other skin conditions soon after birth such as:

  • Acne
  • White or yellow patches on the head
  • Reddish rash on the face, limbs, or trunk
  • Tiny white bumps on the face

These skin conditions usually disappear after a few weeks. But if you find that remaining or reappearing, you might need to bring your baby to their pediatrician.
