Has your child caught a fever? Because your little one’s immune system is still developing, they are more vulnerable to getting sick than you. As a result, the occasional cold is something that all parents will need to handle at some point. If your child has caught a cold, there are numerous things you can do to help nurse them back to health. We’re covering all of them in our latest blog post. From dressing your little one in soft summer PJs for baby wear to giving them some Pedialyte, here are our top tips for taking care of a sick child.

Top 5 Tips and Tricks for Taking Care of Your Little One When They’re Under the Weather

1. Make sure your child gets plenty of fluids

Throughout the day, you need to make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids. Water, juice, and milk are suitable drinks for keeping your child hydrated. Pedialyte® is great for supporting your kid’s immune system and replacing lost electrolytes. If your little one has a sore throat, you can add some honey to hot tea or heat some broth for them. Warm beverages can help break up mucus and soothe a nasty cough.

Avoid giving your child caffeinated and sugary drinks, as they can dehydrate your child or even make them feel worse. That said, if your child is acting a little stubborn over what they’ll drink, you can encourage them with some popsicles and gelatin.

2. Dress your little one in lightweight summer PJs for babies with fevers

If your child is feeling hot and sweaty or has chills with a fever, you can help them feel more comfortable by dressing them in some soft bamboo pajamas. Lark Adventurewear offers cozy bamboo essentials made from temperature-regulating Softek™ fabric. Your child will feel much more comfortable after changing into these light and breathable essentials. This unique fabric is also stain-resistant and has a UPF of 50+, making it perfect to continue wearing once your child is healthy and ready to play. 3. Turn on a fan and keep the room cool

Sick child with high feverIs your child heating up? Turn on a fan to help them cool down.

To help circulate the air in the room, turn on a fan or open a window. Doing this will also help your child stay cool if they’re starting to get hot and sweaty. In general, you should try to keep the room’s temperature between 70 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit. That said, if they’re getting the chills, then you should grab a warm blanket instead to nestle them inside.

4. Keep their diet simple

A long time ago, pediatricians recommended the BRAT diet for sick children. The BRAT diet, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast, was thought to give a child’s gut some much-needed rest while recovering from their sickness.

But because BRAT diet foods are low in essential nutrients like protein and fat, the child’s gastrointestinal tract is not given the resources it needs to recover properly. Therefore, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that children stick to a well-balanced diet made of fruits, vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates if they are sick.

5. Help them maintain a positive attitude

Being sick is never fun. When you’re a child, being sick means missing out on fun activities like soccer practice or painting class. It may also mean catching up on missed school work, depending on their age.

But you don’t have to let your child soak in their misery all day! Instead, cheer them up by watching a fun TV show or playing a game together. You can also help take their mind off their cold by drawing some pretty pictures or filling in new coloring books. Going on a pleasant stroll outside before lying back in a warm bubble bath is also a perfect way to cheer your little one up.
